Ferragosto in Italy

In Italy, August is the quintessential holiday season, and Ferragosto on August 15th is the pinnacle of summer celebrations. Cities empty out as people head to the coast or countryside, eager for some relaxation and fun. It’s a cherished time for families and friends to reconnect, step away from daily life, and embrace the full spirit of summer. But what makes Ferragosto so special, and how did it become such an integral part of Italian culture?

The origins of Ferragosto trace back to ancient Rome, when Emperor Augustus established it in 18 B.C. as Feriae Augusti (Augustus' Rest), a holiday to celebrate the harvest and prosperity. Over the centuries, this festival merged with the Christian Feast of the Assumption, evolving into a day of both religious and cultural significance that remains deeply embedded in the Italian way of life.

How to celebrate Ferragosto with style?

Barbecues and Festivities
Ferragosto is synonymous with gathering around the grill. Whether by the sea, in the hills, or in a rural setting, an outdoor barbecue is a tradition that brings people together. The air fills with the tantalizing scent of meats, seafood, vegetables, and even cheeses sizzling over the coals, complemented by fresh bread, salads, and fine wine. It’s a moment of joy, where laughter and good food are shared. At Marina di Venezia, the aroma of grilling fills the air, and the sight of long, festive tables set for celebration is a common and delightful one.

Sun and Sea
For those lucky enough to be near the coast, Ferragosto is the perfect day to spend at the beach. From invigorating midnight swims to friendly beach volleyball matches, the activities are all about fun and relaxation. Italian beaches buzz with life, hosting concerts, fireworks, and late-night parties that carry the energy of summer well into the night. Our beach will transform into a vibrant dance floor – on August 14th, the “Love Generation 90s” party will have everyone moving to classic hits from the '90s, followed by the lively “Radio Wow Beach Party” on August 15th.

Watermelon Tradition
Watermelon is the iconic fruit of Ferragosto, symbolizing the sweet, refreshing essence of summer in Italy. No celebration is complete without it. Whether shared at a beach picnic, an outdoor lunch, or a starlit dinner, watermelon brings a burst of joy and a cool respite from the heat, making every slice a taste of summer’s peak.

Local Celebrations
Across Italy, Ferragosto is marked by a variety of local events. Fairs, religious processions, and community gatherings bring color and life to town squares and streets, offering entertainment and a sense of belonging. It’s a time to rediscover local traditions and celebrate togetherness. In the Cavallino area, be sure to check out the Sagra di Santa Filomena feast in Treporti on August 10th and the Sagra d’estate summer festival in Ca’Vio on August 17th.

Ferragosto is the heart of the Italian summer – a day that celebrates life, community, and the simple pleasures of the season. Whether you’re grilling with friends, enjoying a day at the beach, or picnicking in nature, Ferragosto is a time to savor the best of summer and create unforgettable memories.

Happy Ferragosto to everyone!
