In Cavallino-Treporti, you can enjoy a truly special experience: cycling above the water along Via Pordelio, on the longest overwater cycleway of its kind in Europe.
La Via del Respiro is much more than a cycle path. It is a harmonious encounter between nature and innovation that, in just a few years, has become one of the most distinctive symbols of Cavallino-Treporti and an unmissable route for anyone wishing to discover the Venetian lagoon by bike.
The project began with a clear purpose: to offer a safe and sustainable alternative for getting around, while at the same time enhancing the extraordinary beauty of the lagoon landscape. First opened in July 2021, the route was extended over the following years and officially completed in July 2025.
Today, the Cavallino-Treporti cycle path stretches for 8.5 kilometres along Via Pordelio, with 6.5 kilometres running on a suspended metal structure that follows the edge of the Venetian lagoon.
More than 300 lighting points illuminate the route, making it accessible both during the day and in the evening. Along the way, numerous panoramic rest areas invite you to slow down, stop for a while and take in the reflections on the water and the lagoon’s ever-changing colours.
Cycling along La Via del Respiro means moving at a slower, more mindful pace, enjoying an experience that brings together sport, well-being and nature. Sunset is one of the most evocative times to discover it, when the light reflects across the water and the lagoon’s salt marshes.
But the cycleway is not only about beauty. It also responds to practical mobility needs, improving safety and making travel along Via Pordelio more orderly and pleasant. It forms part of a network of around 60 kilometres of cycle routes across Cavallino-Treporti, allowing you to explore the area between lagoon, market gardens, sea, pinewoods and historic fortifications. Another route worth discovering is the evocative Via del Tramonto, a 12.9-kilometre itinerary through Punta Sabbioni, between lagoon, sea and pinewood.
The quality of the cycling network has also received important national recognition. FIAB – the Italian Federation for Environment and Cycling – awarded Cavallino-Treporti the yellow ComuneCiclabile flag with 5 Bike Smiles, the highest recognition given to municipalities showing the strongest commitment to cycling-friendly policies.
