Cycling Above the Lagoon: A Signature Experience in Cavallino-Treporti
Imagine cycling not on land, but suspended above the shimmering waters of the Venetian lagoon. In Cavallino-Treporti this dream takes shape along Via Pordelio, home to Europe’s longest cantilevered bike path – an attraction that has already become a modern icon.
Called La Via del Respiro – the Path of Breath – this route is more than engineering brilliance. It’s a dialogue between human creativity and nature’s poetry, a project that in just a few years has turned into one of the most striking emblems of the area.

The vision was bold yet simple: to create a safe, sustainable way of moving while celebrating the unique beauty of the lagoon. First opened in July 2021, the route has been steadily extended, reaching full completion this summer. Today it stretches for 8.5 kilometers, 6.5 of which literally glide above the still waters, supported by a sleek steel structure that hugs the lagoon’s edge.
Over 300 elegant lights illuminate the way, making it accessible by day and night. Along the route, panoramic rest points tempt you to pause, breathe, and surrender to the play of reflections and colors across the water. Here, cycling turns into a slow, mindful journey – a graceful fusion of sport, wellbeing and nature.

Yet this path is more than pure beauty. It also answers practical needs: enhancing safety, improving the flow of traffic on Via Pordelio, and enriching a wider network of some 60 kilometers of cycle routes across Cavallino-Treporti. From trails through vegetable gardens and seaside stretches to historic fortresses and the evocative Via del Tramonto – the Sunset Path – that skirts beach and pinewood, the area offers endless ways to explore on two wheels.
Its excellence has not gone unnoticed. FIAB, the Italian Federation for Environment and Cycling, has awarded Cavallino-Treporti the yellow flag and the prestigious 5 Bike Smile rating – the highest accolade for cycling-friendly destinations.
For guests of Marina di Venezia, this experience could not be easier. The path is just a pedal stroke away, connected directly by cycling and pedestrian links. Our campsite is the perfect launchpad for discovering this masterpiece and the surrounding routes that make Cavallino-Treporti a paradise for active, sustainable travel.
And to make it even more memorable, we offer exclusive excursions for our guests: guided tours along the cantilevered path, sunset walks between lagoon and pine forest, and themed itineraries where nature, history and culture weave together. Each is a chance to see the landscape from surprising perspectives, capture unforgettable images, and savor the region in its purest form – all with the comfort of starting directly from the campsite.
